Mobile banking

An everyday banking app rebuilt around the few things people actually do every day. My proudest project to date.

PROBLEM SOLVING CASE

01

Problem

Mobile banking – Problem
The biggest task I had was to create the Trading feature in the mobile banking app. The problem was that the feature should be targeted to people who aren't expert traders, but do occasionally trade within the app.  My approach was to analyse first and foremost the requirement criteria for this feature. This involved speaking with all Stakeholders, from POs and BAs to developers.

Research and Conception

Mobile banking – Research and Conception
After the requirements were clear, the next step was to research the market from both solutions and customers and what they expect within such a feature.  Finding solutions out there was relatively easy, since there are a handful of apps designed for high volume trading, and banking apps with trading already incorporated.  Working parallel, I contacted my private network, and company wide, people I knew who traded and could provide me their inputs on how they traded, and what specific flows or behaviours they expected when trading with such a tool.

Output

Mobile banking – Output
The concept was discussed with stakeholders from different banks, and a User Testing was conducted to test certain hypotheses regarding the flows.  Once the product was done and released, the feedback from the banks, whether from customers directly, or through app store ratings and feedback were monitored and addressed.  The final result was a satisfied and well integrated trading feature within the banking app.  Success was measured by how many new banks requested this feature upon feature requests and the average 4.5 App Store Ratings.

Context

A full mobile banking product with payments, standing-orders, cards, e-bill, trading and self service implemented into one app through progressive disclosure.

My role

  • Lead UX designer across research, concept and hand-over
  • Owner of the shared component library used by three feature teams
  • Facilitator for stakeholder feature request UX design
  • End to end responsibility

Approach

  • Analysed acceptance criteria alongside research and design thinking
  • Ran moderated tests on prototypes with customers of very different ages and confidence levels
  • Built one card and transaction pattern that every team reused instead of redrawing

Outcome

  • Fewer taps to complete a payment and a noticeably calmer home screen
  • A rating lift driven by first-time users finding their way without help
  • A component library that kept later releases visually consistent
